Default Exe Files not working

My friend has got a AMD athlon 3200+ processor and ASUS motherboard with 256 MB of RAM. No exe files worked on his system some days back. And thinking its a software complaint we formatted c drive and got a new copy of Windows XP Service Pack Two. But the problem persist and his system still is not executing any exe files. His system has got no anti virus. So i am not sure that he is having a virus in his computer. So anyone know about this please help.

That is messed up. Are you sure it still doesnt work after the format? Are you sure that he is actually formatting and not just updating or rolling back the os?

It might be Windows itself. Maybe you got the corrupted windows to begin with and that's why it does not allow you to use any exe files. I don't think that formatting C drive would help you much. Did you try reinstalling windows?

I have a simular problem with one of my computers. I am running Windows XP-sp2. On this particular computer when I open my documents I can not open the documents in any folder by double clicking on it. I must go to the application to open the folder. Anyone know whats up with that?

Its problem with the windows registry. The same happens sometimes you can't open your drives by double clicking them.(This also happens due to virus attacks) I found out the real problem with analyzing the registry. It was some string missing in the open option for "Drives"; but couldn't fix it. Yet, it can be solved by repairing Windows XP using the installation CD.

Naives get your friend to do a windows repair using their windows disk and see what happens. Also install anti-virus on the pc you can grab a copy for free - AVG free anti-virus it's great.

Run a scan and see if there are any viruses on the pc.

If that still doesn't help I would suggest unplugging the power on the pc and removing the bios battery in case their is a virus in the hardware to reset to hardware defaults.
