As far as Vista is concerned it really depends on the hardware you are going to install it on and what type of a user you are is you are a basic user and your computer can handle Vista then you are safe installing it now. On the other hand if you are a power user or a gamer you are not going to like vista due to the greater amount of overhead that it uses and the amount of builtin security and it has a tendancy to crash if it is being run on a bare minniums system.

Vista should not be upgraded to unless you have a fairly new computer or have bought a new pc or are going to be able to use all the features of vista.

Vista is still not supported by all hardware and you just need to give it a go to see if it will work but is still touch and go at the moment.

Some software will not work with Vista as yet and there are still major bugs and uses up lots of system resources so if you are a gamer or a power user I would also recommend not to update.

For most I would recommend to wait at least a year or two to upgrade or even longer if xp is still supported. I will only upgrade again to the next version when forced to even though I am an IT support person I don't have fond memories of any Microsoft version 1 of anything.

Be careful if you do upgrade as you may have to revert to xp.

I currently use Vista and have had not one problem with it. If you meet all the requirements then Vista is freaking sweet. Though, if your buying a new computer or gonna buy a it off the shelf then I would wait for SP1. Its currently in beta and its gonna be sexy.

Ok here is the thing with updating to Windows Vista. They can't test it before they send it out, especially those that come from dell, hp, or any other computer companies. If you are gonna get vista and expect it to work slightly good, get a DESKTOP with it already loaded on it. It makes it a bit better.

It's always been safe to use. You mean when is it advicable. Well, I'd be fine getting it now since I'm a gamer and want DX10. But realisticly I'd wait for SP1, maybe even 2. It's like XP, it was horrible at first. Just wait and Vista will turn out as great as XP did (or at least close, XP is awesome. ((pfft, Mac..)))

Vista will never be "safe" to use. Windows XP still isn't. The question should be this. When will Vista stop crashing your computer. I have never had so many problems with an operating system. It has so many errors its not even funny. If you do get it, get premium. It doesn't crash as much. Also, don't use those upgrade discs that companies send you. They can't be tested so they send them out praying that they work and in the end they end up frying your mother board.

It seems that Microsoft has given out a new OS called Windows7 and it's said better than Vista .
