    Default harddrive space

my hard drive is running out of space. is there anyway i can figure out whats taking up most of my space. i have a 40gb hard drive but im all filled up. my musics are about 20gb in my hard drive. 18gb to be exact.. and all my other stuff combined together is like 4gb. that makes 22gb of files i got in my hard drive. but when i click my hard drive. it says i only have like 500mb left. whats the deal with that. does anyone know whats the probleM? is there any way i can try to free more space and find my other 10gb?

There is a simple and a difficult way to go about this. The harder way is to go to your main drive...and then right click on the folder, and then properties, it will tell you how much memory is stored in that folder. I would recommend trying Documents and Settings, My Music, Videos, Downloads, Program Files, and the Windows directory first. Once you find that a folder is taking a large amount of space, go inside that one and see what all folders and files are inside that, and repeat the process until you find what you need. A better alternative is to use this shareware software, Where'd My Space Go.

The best program for your situation is WinDirStat. I've been having the same problem lately - I have 3 100GB hard drives, and a 200GB hard drive, and I sure get confused when I end up with only a few gigs of free space on all drives combined. This program will show you (in a really cool tables of boxes) how much space is taken up in each and every folder and file on your drive. It's all in this really cool file tree that you can expand and retract and stuff. It's very useful, in my opinion. And it's free - that's the best part.

oh wow. thanks man. this really helped me to find what was taking up the hard drive space. some folder called recylcer. is that important or what? i dont know whether i should keep it or not. im thinking about copying all my important files and music to another hard drive. and wiping it clean. just to make sure that aint important or not. but im still not sure.. but yeah. this really helped a lot. i used the other program the other guy sent me earlier. it didnt show up that folder . so yeah. thanks again.

o wait scratch that. the other program worked also. i just checked it again and i saw it. i mistaken that folder when i first looked at it for something else. it showed up like 7000mb so i didnt really notice it. when i used the other program. the windirstats, it showed up as gb. pretty cool how that can find out what was in my hard drive that was taking up like 20% of my hard drive space HAHAH!!!. thank you shoes22 and kaisonic. if it wasnt fo you mang. i wouldve prolly went the hard way deleting stuff and would still be missing that hard drive space XD

Well, Recycler is actually a Windows folder that contains all the files in your Recycle Bin. To get rid of that stuff, just empty your recycle bin. Or just go the old fashioned way and never use the bin - just use Shift+Delete to permanently delete files. Also, keep in mind, GB and MB are just different units of space - approx. 1000 MB is equal to a GB. So 7000 MB is still something to notice, even though it's in MB and not GB. Same thing goes for KB - almost all Windows folders show file sizes in KB, so keep an eye out for anything 1,000,000 KB and above, since that's equal to a GB.

oo..so thats what that was.. but yeah.. i know what equals to what. i know that 1000mb = 1gb and stuff..i know all the kilobyte stuff, megabyte stuff, gigbbyte stuff. i just skimmed through it too quick and wasnt focusing :]. ahha i guess it kept building up in that recycler folder everytime i formatted my computer.. i guess thats why it piled up so much..now i am free of that. at the moment. AHHAHA.
