Windows 7 upgrading from Vista?

Ok, I just got My Windows 7 CD (standard retail version) today and I'm upgrading from Vista. I wanted to know can I upgrade from vista without doing a clean sweep of my computer so is that a must, as I have like a million softwares to install over. =] thanks
