Default which one is better, ATI or nvidia?

I am planning to buy a new computer for my sister and i am not sure what video card to go with. It mostly for surfing, hw etc but for games also. Prob planning on using this comp for 5-6 years or more.

I personally like nvidia products and I have been using them for long time. i don't think you will find much difference unless you are really a hardcore gamer. If you just using the computer for basic gaming, go with something descent.

hmm.. nowadays the choice is simpler for you since amd is acquire ati..

tomorrow amd and ati will be one company or maybe one factory and perhaps amd processor will optimize for ati chipset and graphic card
so if your plan is using amd for the choice of 64bit computing (although winxp 64bit still rare - but linux is available) choose ati...

but if you use intel as the processor (and perhaps the chipset also intel - just for matching vendor) you should choose ati card again.... why?

I can't explain, try googling what is intel chipset got to do with ati card. but why don't we see the latest ASUS finest board - P5W DH Deluxe - it used intel as the processor and chipset but the graphic card is designed for ati crossfire

and why don't you check the last five year apple mac/ibook/imac hardware specification, the one with onboard video. what is the card brand ? it's ati again....

hmm.. curious hah??

actually nvidia doesn't bad at all... first time using computer I hv nvidia brand and I still want the lastest and finest but cheap nvidia card.. but that dont happen

and when I buy asus mobo with onboard ati card with intel pro for office pc, it gave me pleasure playing games (not the latest games around though).. and now I hv the amd64 3200+ with onboard x200 - dfi board - at my home. I can play the last 1-2 years games.

I love ati since then. and I hv decided to buy ati x1600xt card from gecube but ... waiting my annual bonus this year :P

hope this gave you an idea on how ati ... vs ... nvidia

well i see nvidia all over the place. Alienware focus on nvidia and dell is doing the same. I am guessing its cuz dell bought alienware or they have some kind of contract with nvidia. they do offer the ATI option. i guess i'll just go with the default option they have.

looking at this one for now - http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...XPS400F1&s=dhs

I've had experience with both ATI and Nvidia, ATI experience being with my old computers and Nvidia with my current. So far, they've all been great. They've done more than I expected for what their capabilities are supposed to be, and they're more reliable than I thought. So really, I think they're equal and both have their perks. It's kinda like PSP vs. Nintendo DS - incomparable because they have their own special features.

i don't rely to choose which is the best. my favorite is ATi from the beginning to end ATi with RAGE's series also well known years ago and now with the newest series, i'm excited enough with its capabilities.

Well it doesn't matter that much if it's ati or nvidia because for every ati there is an nvidia card almost like it so the difference isn't that big between.But.....i've had both ati and nvidia , ati provides a little clearer image....nvidia...is just a little fuzzy.ati is crystal clear. But if you are into gaming... there are lot's more games out there optimized for nvidia than for ati so it depends what you want

Nvidia can be called the outright winner in the graphics category, until ATI came back onto the scene.
Nvidia still holds the top spot as far as sales are concerned, ATI has begun to beat Nvidia as far as performance is concerned.
In addition to their hardware performace, ATI has invested much effort into improving their previously notoriously bad drivers.

check out the detailed comparison here ..

If you're looking for the best graphics card in the market then Nvidia has it. 8800GTX has not been beaten so far, not even by the HD 2900XT. Its simply the best

Therefore, for the time being, Nvidia rules, until ATi comes up with something more powerful.

If no gamming is involved for or for just basic RPG internet games, the onboard graphic should be enough.

If you do a little gaming just go with a medium priced card such as the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, its pretty old and still works perfectly with the new games. But this card won't work for next years games.

If your planning on surfing, internet games and hard core gaming that is medium price ranged, get the ATI Radeon X1950XTX it is well worth the investment. or if your short on budget get the ATI Radeon X1650, but i still recommand getting the ATI Radeon X1950XTX for jsut $50, not much but like i said.. if your on a budget the X1650 will do just fine, but it won't last for 5-6 of gamming.

The Radeon 9800 Pro has been around since 2001 i believe and is still doing great on 2007 released games so i would think the Radeon X1950 would do the same.

Sincerely Kira
