Why does my computer monitor darken? It doesn't turn off completely, but

darkens considerably.? I have a Gateway Windows XP. Lately my monitor has been darkening on its own. When it does this, I can still see a hint of the page I was looking at, but to fix it I have to turn the monitor off and then on again and it works.

Does it go into a power saving mode? If this is the cause, you should be able to adjust the settings for it.

Sounds like a power-saving mode. You can change the settings for that in the control panel.
