This new linux distro is really driving me crazy?

I installed the latest Ubuntu distro, and not only do I think it is way too demanding of the system resources (however it looks pretty good), but there are annoying tidbits with it.

Can someone tell me how to:

A) have it shut down automatically without me having to push the power source.

B) Not have it automatically retract the DVD drawer of my CD/DVD drive whenever I put a disc in it. It has been jamming a couple of times, and I don't want to have it broken due to an idiotic choice in program layout.

Try PCLinuxOS the KDE version. I used Ubuntu since version 4 and up to 9.10, I don't use it anymore, its not the system of my choice.
