Unhappy What a Partiality from Conexant

Conexant, one among the leading modem chipset producers are not providing the modem drivers for Linux Operating Systems. Where as, they are providing the drivers for all the Windows Operating Systems for free. They are included in the CD provided with the internal dial up modems. Earlier, I had a smartlink modem in my system. It was working quite properly and they have provided the drivers for linux in the CD itself. That modem got damaged and I bought a new one with Conexant chipset. I was unhappy to find that the driver for Linux was not in the CD. I thought the driver will be available in the net. When searched their site, I found that they are not providing drivers for Linux. Another site, Linuxant are providing the drivers for Conexant chipsets but they provide only 14Kbps speed drivers for free and for full speed we have to pay about 20US$ for the full version(Sametime, the modem costs only about 300INR or 6US$ only). I tried with an old Pc-Tel modem too but found that Conexant has acquired Pc-Tel too and are not providing new drivers.

What a partiality this is! I think Microsoft has given the company money not for providing Linux drivers.

No they just don't want people to get a hold of their drivers so they can alter them easily as for Linux they have to provide the drivers in a binary form for Linux and most companies don't want to provide drivers in this type of format!

I am using modem of a company named "Smartlink". I don't know which chip its using. But surely it is not of Conaxent. Its automatically detected and working fine on my Ubuntu. If you think you must have a modem try some other company or wait till they change their mind.

Smart link is the chipset and the modem may be from some other company. Its nice to hear SmartLink is now automatically detected by Ubuntu. My earlier SmartLink modem was not automatically detected but one good thing was that they are providing the drivers for Linux too in the CD.

You might need to compile the source files which you got with the CD. I think its really a hard job to compile the source codes. For that you might need a lot of other tools too. Frankly speaking, in my experience with Linux, till now, I wasn't able to install a software perfectly by compiling the source code. I always go for a .deb version of the software for my debian system.
