Default "Vegetarian Diet Weakens Bones"

Vegetarian diet 'weakens bones' - Yahoo! Canada News

Quote:
People who live on vegetarian diets have slightly weaker bones than their meat-eating counterparts, Australian researchers said Thursday.

A joint Australian-Vietnamese study of links between the bones and diet of more than 2,700 people found that vegetarians had bones five percent less dense than meat-eaters, said lead researcher Tuan Nguyen.
Do you think a vegetarian diet is healthier?

Personally, I have tried being a vegetarian and even a vegan but I could not do it, because I have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and if I do not consume animal protein I feel very weak.

I was a vegetarian for the first, Idno, 10 years of my life? Not by choice, but because that's what I got fed and at that age I didn't really question it. I had no health issues whatsoever, but that may be because we also had iron/vitamin supplements given to us, to make up for what was missing in our lack-of meat.

I eat meat now, and still suffer no problems.

I would disagree with this.

Vegetarian food is always healthier. Avoid junk foods and you will always stay healthy irrespective of veg or non veg food you intake

I dont agree with the statement that the 'Vegetarian diet Weakens bones'. Because still a very large group of India are pure vegetarian, Still they dont have any problem. So this study is not practically correct.

Nah, I'm sure it's bad. By nature, you'll just miss loads of proteins and other things your body just needs. Ok, sure, there are substitutes, and I might be wrong, but I don't think vegetarians take enough of these unnatural subsitutes, to compensate for their natural loss.

Of course studies like this tend to make very generalized statements. Real life isn't so black and white. But, I do feel that for most people the healthiest diet is one with a lot of variety of fresh foods. It's easier to get a variety of foods and nutrients if you consume animal products. Of course it's also possible to do this and be a vegetarian if you want to, but it's more difficult.

As I stated earlier I personally do not do well on a vegetarian diet.

What crap? It is the biggest blatant lie I have ever read. That is what I would have said had I not read the complete article!
From the article - "The results suggest that vegetarian diets, particularly vegan diets, are associated with lower bone mineral density," Nguyen wrote in the study, which was published Thursday in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
"But the magnitude of the association is clinically insignificant," he added.
So, he is fine.
