Default my computer is running a bit slow opening programs. whats the cheapest way

to upgrade? im running two chips of 256MB DDR2RAM.

if i snag a 512MB to add in addition to the 256MB...will that suffice? or should i just go ahead and spend the 100$ on a gig chip???

Specifying your processor speed will be more helpful to suggest what is better for you. Also, which operating system are you using? Also, which all programs open slow? Slowing down of programs may also be due to problems in Operating system....

The price of RAM is getting cheaper nowadays, you don't have to worry about the money.
Just check you mainboard model serial and search through the net for its official site. There you can find its specification and it will tell you what is the best composition of the hardware you can get for you PC. Too high memory sometime will not higher you PC performance though.

Ram is a good upgrade. start to look at a new harddrive as well as a new cpu/motherboard.
if your using graphics intensive apps like photoshop or games id recommend a new graphics card (nvidia 8 or 9 series)

Fuck that. Defrag the computer. If you don't want to download a defragger, just go to Start>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter.

Cost to you? Nil.

It depends..... on what Operating System you are using. GNU/Linux dosen't need to be defragmented and there aren't any utility for that....

Upgrade RAM, it is quite cheap. 2 GB is not a bad choice. You have the money go for it.
