Damn Small Linux should do it. It is smallest (59 MB), if you must, will work without installation.

there is a special version of ubuntu called xubuntu or something and it uses far less resources than ubuntu, i use it on an old p3 laptop i have to run as a mail/web/ftp server

XUbuntu has the light weight XFCE desktop environment, which make it lighter and less resource using than Ubuntu. You can also chose the LXDE desktop environment, which I felt as better than XFCE.

I have a very old computer and I want to install linux on it. I would like a linux that is compatible with many hardware devices and would work with 160mb of RAM and 4GB of hard drive. My computer is a toshiba 2065cds. Also, I would like something that looks like windows because I am very used to windows. Thank you for your help.
