So what is the difference between shared and dedicated IP address?

Every single computer that is connected to the internet is assigned a specific IP address and this IP address aids in communication.  An example of an IP address is 196.168.0.1.  I am sure you are familiar with that IP address if you have a router in your home.   When it comes to web hosting, you have two options for IP address – Dedicated vs Shared IP address.

Dedicated IP is a static IP address where your website will have it’s own IP address.  Therefore, if you type web domain name or the IP address in your browser, you will get the same website.

Shared IP is where multiple website are using the same IP address.   In this case, when you enter domain url in your browser, the webserver figures out which website to show you.  If you enter the shared IP in your browser, you will get a default server page.

Usage of Dedicated IP

Dedicated IP is mainly used for SSL certificates and anonymous FTP access.   If you wish to provide secure access for product ordering, login or membership site, you will need a SSL certificate.  For SSL certificate to work properly, they need to issued to domains with dedicated IP.

Some marketers also believe dedicated IP can help with search engine optimization because if you look at search engine listing, you will find that majority of the website are on dedicated IP.
